Shine Brighter This Spring: 5 Window-Cleaning Tips for Your Marvin Windows

April 25, 2025

Spring is in the air—and there’s no better time to give your home a fresh new outlook. One of the easiest ways to boost your curb appeal and brighten your living space? Clean, sparkling windows. If you’ve invested in Marvin Windows, keeping them, crystal clear doesn’t just improve your view—it preserves their beauty and performance for years to come.

At The Window and Door Store we know our customers take pride in their homes, which is why we’ve put together these five easy window-cleaning tips to help your Marvin windows shine this season.

1. Start with the Right Tools

Marvin windows are built with premium materials—so treat them with care. Skip the harsh scrubbers and opt for:

  • A soft microfiber cloth or sponge
  • A squeegee
  • A spray bottle filled with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap
  • Regular glass cleaner can be used
  • Optional: a vinegar-water solution for extra shine

Avoid abrasive cleaners or ammonia-based products, which can damage glass coatings and hardware. Also, Newspaper is NOT recommended for use on glass.

2. Clean the Frames and Tracks First

Before tackling the glass, wipe down the frames, sills, and tracks. Dust and dirt can collect in these areas and cleaning them first prevents grime from spreading onto freshly washed glass. For Marvin’s Ultrex® fiberglass or aluminum-clad wood frames, use a damp cloth and mild detergent. Be sure to dry thoroughly to avoid water spots.

3. Wash on a Cloudy Day

It may sound counterintuitive, but the best time to clean your windows is on a cloudy day. Direct sunlight can cause your cleaning solution to dry too quickly, leaving behind streaks. Overcast skies give you more time to wipe and squeegee, resulting in a streak-free finish.

4. Use the Squeegee Technique

For a professional-level clean, use a squeegee from top to bottom in smooth, vertical strokes. Wipe the blade with a cloth between strokes to avoid drips or smears. If you don’t have a squeegee handy, a lint-free microfiber cloth works well, too—just be sure to dry the glass completely for a spot-free shine.

5. Don’t Forget the Screens

Your Marvin window screens collect pollen, dust, and debris throughout the year. Carefully remove them and rinse with a hose or soak them in a tub of soapy water. Gently scrub with a soft brush, then let them air dry before reinstalling. Clean screens not only look better, but they also keep your newly cleaned glass sparkling longer.

Bonus Tip: Regular Maintenance Pays Off

Marvin windows are engineered for performance and longevity—but regular cleaning and care go a long way in protecting your investment. A seasonal refresh keeps your windows operating smoothly and looking like new year after year.

Nebraska winters are known for bitter cold, strong winds, and heavy snow, and your windows and doors are the first line of defense. If they’re not properly maintained, small issues like drafts, cracked caulking, or worn weather stripping can quickly turn into major heat loss and higher energy bills. That’s why now is the perfect time for a seasonal home checkup. And if you discover anything that requires more than basic maintenance, The Window & Door Store is ready to help. Their team provides expert guidance, repair solutions, and high-performance replacement products designed for harsh Midwest winters. A winter maintenance routine doesn’t have to be complicated. These simple steps can keep your home warm, efficient, and protected all season long. 1. Check for Drafts and Air Leaks Drafts are one of the most common winter problems. Even small gaps can let in cold air and allow heat to escape, forcing your furnace to work harder. How to spot leaks: Run your hand around window and door edges. Use a candle or incense stick to detect moving air. Look for visible gaps or worn sealant. If you notice drafts that don’t go away after weather-stripping or caulking, The Window & Door Store can assess whether repair or replacement is needed. 2. Inspect and Replace Weather Stripping Weather stripping naturally wears down over time from use and outdoor exposure. Damaged or missing weather stripping is one of the fastest ways cold air sneaks inside. Signs it needs replacing: Cracks or pieces missing Flattened or brittle areas Difficulty getting windows or doors to close tightly This quick, inexpensive fix can dramatically improve comfort and reduce winter energy waste. 3. Clean and Lubricate Tracks and Hardware Dirt, ice, and debris can build up in window and sliding door tracks, making it difficult for them to seal properly. This can lead to poor insulation and even cause hardware to freeze. Give tracks a quick seasonal tune-up by: Vacuuming out dirt and debris Wiping surfaces with a mild cleaner Lubricating tracks, hinges, and latches with silicone spray Smooth operation ensures your windows and doors close tightly against winter conditions. 4. Refresh Exterior Caulking Caulk creates a vital moisture barrier. During winter, fluctuating temperatures cause caulk to expand and contract, which can lead to cracking. Inspect the exterior edges of your windows and doors for: Gaps or missing patches Dried, cracked, or crumbly areas Separation between caulk and siding Replacing worn caulk helps prevent water intrusion, rot, and long-term structural damage. 5. Look for Seal Failure or Condensation Issues While some interior condensation is normal in winter, moisture trapped between glass panes signals a failed seal. Seal failure reduces energy efficiency and can make rooms feel colder. Common signs: Persistent fog between panes Ice forming on interior glass Drafty areas around the frames If you see these issues, it may be time to consider repair or replacement, especially if the windows are older. 6. Make Sure Exterior Doors Seal Tight Your exterior doors take a beating in winter. Loose hinges, worn door sweeps, and misaligned frames all allow cold air inside. Check for: Light coming through edges Air movement along the bottom sweep Difficulty latching the door securely A simple adjustment or new sweep can restore a proper seal and keep the air warm where it belongs. 7. Keep Snow and Ice Away from Frames Snow piled against your home can cause moisture problems for window and door frames. Best practices include: Clearing snow a few inches away from exterior trim Removing ice from door thresholds and window wells Avoiding metal tools that can scratch frames Preventing moisture buildup helps protect your home’s structure and finishes. 8. Consider Upgrading Older Windows and Doors If your windows or doors are 20 years old or more, winter may reveal their age through drafts, foggy glass, or uneven temperatures in rooms. Modern products offer superior energy efficiency, durability, and insulation. The Window & Door Store can help you explore options that fit your home, your aesthetic goals, and your energy-saving needs.
